Secure Clinical Message Exchange
Until recently, care providers have been limited in their ability to electronically exchange clinical messages with one another. Clinical message exchange is generally conducted by fax, phone and paper – often far after a patient encounter is completed – compromising both the efficiency and effectiveness of care coordination. At the same time, the transition to electronic exchange can be difficult due to the disparate and disconnected health information technology (HIT) platforms used by other care providers.
Surescripts Clinical Direct Messaging provides Direct secure messaging, allowing you to securely exchange up-to-date patient information across all care settings – ambulatory, acute, post-acute, long term, and specialty – while meeting current and future standards for Meaningful Use.

How It Works
Surescripts Clinical Direct Messaging is based on Direct messaging protocols launched in 2010 by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology as part of the Direct Project to specify a simple, secure, scalable, standards-based way to send authenticated, encrypted health information directly to known, trusted recipients over the Internet.
Our network connects care providers within a community and across the country through a single point of connectivity and enables you to securely exchange health information with:
- Care providers and hospitals using EHRs connected to the Surescripts network
- Care providers and hospitals participating in a Direct Trusted Agent Accreditation Program (DTAAP)
- HIEs and HISPs
- Retail clinics
Surescripts enables you to meet the MU Stage 2 transitions of care objective, and securely exchange an expanding range of health information—reducing reliance on fax for critical clinical workflows. Examples include:
- Send and receive MU Stage 2 compliant summary of care records with other community partners connected to the network (MU Stage 2 aligned)
- Send and receive general messages from other providers
- Receive Immunization Notifications from pharmacies
- Receive Patient Visit Summaries from retail clinics
Surescripts is already enabling broader health information sharing between care providers using various EHR and HIE solutions. We look forward to working with you.
